Marzocchi 22 Suspension Forks

The Marzocchi 22 series includes the 22 RLO and 22 RLO RC. The Marzocchi 22 RLO comes with a 100mm travel while the 22 RLO RC model has a 120mm travel. Both are designed to be used on cross country bikes.

Marzocchi 44 Series

Fox 32 F Series Forks

The Fox 32 F-Series is one of the several main product lines which the company manufactures for use on mountain bikes. Recent improvements to the forks include “air sprung curves” which allow for a lower compression ratio as well as a new lightweight valve.

Manitou Dorado

Manitou Dorado suspension forks are without doubt the company’s most popular product at the moment. This is partly due to the fact that they have inverted stanchions which is different to more traditional bike forks. This affects a number of different characteristics of the forks compared with other types.
Some of the features of the latest Dorado forks include legs made of carbon, inverted stanchions and a double chamber air spring. Different circuits for low and high speed damping are also included as well as Manitou’s own thru-axle. Combined, these features make for an impressive fork which cannot be overlooked. Manitou R7

Budget

Some of the most important things to consider when buying mountain bike suspension forks are your budget, how much travel you require and how much adjustability you need. Generally the more serious you are about riding the more customization becomes important. While it can be tempting to opt for cheaper bike forks in reality these are rarely a good long term investment. Cheap suspension forks for mountain bikes will often develop problems quicker and will also be heavier. It goes without saying that the most important factor is the type of riding which you will be performing with the suspension forks.

Terminology

Knowing and understanding the terminology used for mountain bike suspension forks is an essential step when selecting forks for your bike. For example, travel is the amount that the fork can move when it is put under strain. While more travel is great for drops it also means that more force will be dissipated while pedaling. For this reason when hill climbing a shorter travel is best in order to conserve energy. Some of the more expensive bike forks allow the rider to adjust the travel.

Other terms include the rebound (the speed at which the suspension fork returns to its original position), damping (the method of control) and crown which is the metal that attaches to the two fork legs together. When choosing suspension forks some mountain bike versions will come with a double or triple crown. The majority, however, will use a single crown system.

The Cannondale Lefty fork uses the same technology developed for the Headshok forks. There are 88 bearings inside the forks which allows the travel to be much smoother than others and hence provides a more comfortable ride with less lost energy. The design reason behind the shift to the Lefty style was the fact that more travel was needed and this required the unit to be moved away from the center.

There are a number of different versions of Cannondale Lefty suspension forks. The various models have a variety of travels, spring systems and materials which affect the type of biking that the forks can be used for. As an example, the Lefty Max w/PBR is built for general purpose mountain biking and comes with a 140mm travel and an air spring. The Lefty Speed Carbon, on the other hand, is built for XC racing and hence has a travel of 110mm and DLR damping. Which one is right for you and your bike will depend on what you plan on using the forks for.

One potential disadvantage of buying Cannondale Lefty suspension forks is that replacement parts are generally harder to find. Fox suspension fork parts, for example, are easy to get hold of in comparison. Also, skilled people who are experienced in setting up Lefty forks are more difficult to find. For this reason Cannondale Lefty suspension forks are usually found in high end bikes rather than entry level. There is also the continued problem with Lefty suspension forks limiting the rider’s ability to use anything other than Cannondale parts such as the headset and wheel.  If you want to have complete control over the components you use on your bike then the Cannondale Lefty may not be the perfect choice.
